What is the International Baccalaureate

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a globally recognized educational program that challenges students to develop critical thinking, research skills and a global vision. Its structure demands a high level of academic commitment and a learning methodology that promotes autonomy and deep analysis of the subjects.

The International Baccalaureate is designed and managed by the International Baccalaureate (IB) in Geneva (Switzerland) and is offered in thousands of schools around the world. The methodology, exams and teacher certification is centralized by this organization and the exams for each subject are unique worldwide, being evaluated externally to your school. If you want to know more about how to choose the most suitable subjects for you, read our blog: Choosing International Baccalaureate subjects for the best universities.

At Five Lands we offer you the possibility of taking IB Tutoring based on your needs and academic requirements that we analyze at the beginning of the program.

What is the International Baccalaureate?

The IB program is designed for students between the ages of 16 and 19 and consists of six subject groups and three key components:

 • Theory of Knowledge (TOK): Develops critical thinking skills by questioning how we acquire knowledge.
 • Monograph (EE): An independent research paper on a topic of interest to the student.
 • Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS): Extracurricular activities that foster personal growth and social commitment.

Students must take courses at different levels and complete internal and external evaluations that test their knowledge and application skills.

IB subjects and levels

The IB is composed of six subject groups, from which students must select one subject from each:

 • Language and Literature
 • Language Acquisition
 • Individuals and Societies (History, Economics, Philosophy, etc.)
 • Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Sports Science, etc.)
 • Mathematics
 • Arts or an elective from another group

The courses can be taken at two levels: High Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL), where the HL courses require greater depth of study and dedication.

IB Scoring System

The maximum IB score is 45 points, and determines, together with the subjects chosen and the level in each one, the access to certain universities. The score is broken down as follows:.

 • Each subject is graded out of 7 points, with a possible total of 42 points.
 • The core components (TOK, EE and CAS) may award up to 3 additional points depending on the student’s performance.

To obtain the IB Diploma, you need to achieve a minimum of 24 points, meet the CAS requirements and not exceed the minimum score limits in HL or SL subjects. For the most demanding and competitive universities it is necessary to be at score levels of 40 in total.

How do we prepare you to improve your IB score?

All our students at Five Lands receive support in choosing the IB subjects they need and their level for the degree they want to take and the universities they want to apply to. Depending on the needs of each student we determine if reinforcement is needed in any subject and what type of reinforcement. Having a good score in Mathematics for example is a requirement in many prestigious universities.

We have online training in practically all IB DP and IB MYP subjects. All training is in English.

IB Tutoring is contracted by packages of hours according to need. They are online classes in real time with expert teachers in each IB subject.

Design your IB strategy

At Five Lands we help you not only to improve your IB score, but also to design the best strategy according to your academic goals. There are numerous cases that you should take into account before choosing to do the IB and choose the corresponding subjects and their levels. Our consultants evaluate your profile and propose the best combination of subjects and levels. Some important aspects to take into account are:
